Edin Terzic has officially resigned as the coach of Borussia Dortmund, the runners-up in the Champions League. Teric expressed his desire for the club embark on a "new era" under a fresh coach, though there has been no immediate announcement regarding his successor. Speculation in the German media suggests that Terzic's assistant, Nuri Sahin, may be in line to take over the reins.
Terzic's tenure came to a close after Dortmund's 2-0 defeat by Real Madrid in the Champions League final at Wembley on June 1st. In a statement released by the club, Terzic explained, “After the game at Wembley, I requested a meeting with the club's senior management team. Having dedicated 10 years to BVB, including five years on the coaching staff and two and a half years as head coach, I believe that the club's new chapter should commence with a new face on the touchline. While this decision has been incredibly challenging, my conviction remains unwavering after thorough deliberation.”
A lifelong supporter of Borussia Dortmund, Terzic's time at the helm appeared to be a dream come true until recently. Despite the remarkable journey to the Champions League final, Dortmund's performance in the German league had been lackluster.
Terzic's stint saw him secure the German Cup as an interim coach in 2021 before assuming the permanent role in May 2022. In the 2023 Bundesliga season, his team finished as runners-up to Bayern Munich, narrowly missing out on the title on goal difference following a draw in the final match.
However, this season, Dortmund found themselves in fifth place in the Bundesliga, marking their poorest finish in almost a decade. Additionally, they were eliminated from the German Cup in the round of 16.
Sebastian Kehl, the sporting director, expressed his gratitude for the shared experiences with Terzic, stating, "We have overcome many challenges together, and collaborating with Edin towards our objectives has been immensely fulfilling. His contributions to our recent accomplishments will forever be celebrated, and I have no doubt that our paths will cross again in the future. Edin is now embarking on a new journey of his own."
