Hunter Biden, the son of President Joe
Biden, has been convicted by a federal jury on all three federal felony gun
charges he faced. This marks the first time in history that a president's
immediate family member has been found guilty of a crime during their father's
term in office. The charges against Hunter Biden stemmed from the purchase of a
revolver in October 2018 at a Delaware gun shop.
Prosecutors argued that Hunter Biden lied on a mandatory gun-purchase form by stating that he was not illegally using or addicted to drugs. The 54-year-old Hunter Biden maintained his composure as the guilty verdicts were read after just three hours of jury deliberation over two days. He hugged his attorneys, smiled weakly, and kissed his wife, Melissa, before leaving the courtroom.
President Joe Biden released a statement following the verdict, expressing his acceptance of the outcome and stating that he would continue to respect the judicial process as Hunter considers an appeal. Hunter Biden faces a potential sentence of up to 25 years in prison, although as a first-time offender, he is unlikely to receive the maximum penalty. The sentencing date has not been set by U.S. District Judge Maryellen Noreika.
Defense attorney Abbe Lowell indicated that they would vigorously pursue all available legal challenges. In a written statement, Hunter Biden expressed disappointment in the outcome but gratitude for the support of his family and friends. The verdict was swiftly delivered after the jury reached a decision.
Despite nearly attending every day of the trial, First Lady Jill Biden missed hearing the verdict in court. Hunter Biden left the courthouse hand in hand with the First Lady and his wife, before departing in waiting SUVs. The conviction of Hunter Biden comes shortly after former President Trump was found guilty of 34 felony charges related to a hush money payment during the 2016 campaign.
It is important to note that while both cases involve legal troubles for high-profile individuals, Hunter Biden is a private citizen not running for any political office. Both individuals have claimed to be victims of the political climate in their respective situations.
