Russian President Vladimir Putin announced the launch of a new non-nuclear medium-range ballistic missile targeting Ukraine's Dnipro region, marking a significant escalation in the ongoing conflict. This missile reportedly carried multiple warheads and may be the first of its kind used in warfare.
Putin confirmed the strike was executed in response to the use of American and British long-range weapons by Ukraine. He described the missile as part of a new Russian system called "Oreshnik," tested successfully in combat conditions.
The attack resulted in at least three injuries and damage to several buildings in Dnipro.
The medium-range missile can travel between 1,000 and 3,000 kilometers. U.S. officials labeled it as an "experimental medium-range" missile.
Putin stated that Russia reserves the right to target military facilities in countries that allow their weapons to be used against Russia, emphasizing the global implications of the conflict.
President Volodymyr Zelensky condemned
the missile launch as a severe escalation and a violation of the UN Charter. He
asserted Ukraine's right to retaliate with long-range weapons and called for
international pressure on Russia.
Ukraine's foreign ministry echoed Zelensky's sentiments, highlighting that Russia's concerns arose only when targets within Russia were hit, indicating a distinction between occupied and Russian territory.
Ukraine's military reported that an
X-47M2 Kinzhal ballistic missile was launched alongside other missiles, with
most being intercepted.
The recent missile launch by Russia represents a notable escalation in the conflict, prompting strong reactions from Ukrainian leadership and raising concerns about the broader implications of the war
